The Artist’s Duobaoge is a large format photo that depicts an actual cabinet fabricated by the artist. This cabinet reproduction is based on a historical screen painting by renowned Korean court painter Yi Ŭngnok (ca. 1860). Yi’s painting is the quintessential representation of the genre of Munbangdo (Scholar Study Painting), a unique still-life painting style that emerged in late eighteenth-century Joseon Korea. Munbangdo screens portray Duobaoge (Treasure Box), a traditional Chinese assymetrical style of cabinets that Korean coveted during this time.
